Due to the rapid development of automobile industry and the lag of urban roadconstruction, the traffic status of many large and medium-sized cities is not optimistic,which causes the problem of traffic jams and environmental pollution, etc. The urbanexpressway which undertakes the city transport of passenger and freight developed quickly,and has become an important way of urban road expansion. The design and constructionscheme of weaving area which is reasonable or not affect the capacity of urban expresswaydirectly. In this dissertation, we mainly concentrate on the traffic flow characteristics andtransportation capacity model for weaving area of urban expressway. Moreover, cellularautomata method is employed to perform simulation and analysis for weaving area whichprovide technical support for the design and construction for urban expressway and help toimprove the traffic capacity and decrease traffic congestion. The main research work issummarized as follows:1. By analyzing the foreign and domestic research status and various structural typesof weaving area, the vehicle following, lane changing and the statistical properties arecomprehensively studied for weaving area of urban expressway. Moreover, the length andwidth of weaving area, intertwined flow ratio and traffic management factors impact ontraffic capacity for weaving area of urban expressway, which provides design basis forconstruction of reasonable weaving area.2. According to the dynamic driving rules, the behavior characteristics and traffic flowcharacteristics is obtained for vehicle of urban expressway. By analyzing the abovecharacteristics and the drivers’ psychological factors, the straight model, linear-followingmodel and lane-changing model based on cellular automata is proposed for weaving areaof urban expressway.3. A reasonable solution of urban expressway for the congested section of TaibaiSouth Road in XI’AN City is designed by accessing the traffic flow data in different time,surrounding residential and urban road network. The microscopic traffic simulation basedon NS cellular automata is operated for designed solution of urban expressway, and thesimulation results show that the scheme can improve the speed of the vehicle and reducetraveling time.
