Wind tunnel test is the main method for structural wind engineeringstudy. As most of the existing and under construction building structure arewithin the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), how to simulate theatmospheric boundary layer accurately and effectively is crucial to the windtunnel simulation technology. At present, the widely used method passivemethod has limitations such as small integral scale. Multi-fan active controlwind tunnel can achieve almost the same turbulent wind velocity history asthe natural wind by frequency conversion velocity modulation and feedbackcontrol technology and how to realize the accurate control of each fan hasbeen the key issue of multi-fan wind tunnel control.This paper is based on the background, by analysis the characteristics ofthe atmospheric boundary layer, designed an active control wind tunnel forthe research of turbulence simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer. Themain work includes four aspects as follows:Firstly, accomplishing overall design of the active control wind tunnelaccording to system requirements, and giving a detailed analysis of its drivingmechanism.Secondly, proceeding related computing for structures static analysis andflow field simulation which are essential in the design process owing to its functions for the wind tunnel design optimization and verification.Thirdly, according to the requirements to complete some of the work ofthe system hardware design and then build the entire hardware controlsystem.Finally, designing and programing the wind speed control software andturbulence simulation module of the active control wind tunnel based onVisual Studio2010C#develop environment, and carrying out turbulencegeneration and modification experiments.The results of turbulence generation and modification experimentsshows that the active control wind tunnel can fulfill the prospective designrequirements, be capable for the simulation of the atmospheric boundarylayer.
