Shield tunneling technology is a major method in the tunnel construction as akind of tunneling method underground, because of its safety, low cost and priority forenvironment. Shield cutting system is the key part interacting with earth during thetunnel construction process. The complicated load of cutting system relates to thedesign and the efficiency of the construction. Due to special position, the load is hardto measure directly during tunneling process. It is significant for providing effectivereference and theoretical basis to analyze the load case of cutting system.Based on the concept of balance, the load of cutting system is analyzed using theelastic contact mechanics model in the thesis. Firstly, the contact mechanics modelbetween a rigid cylinder and the elastic half-space is concerned. The relationshipamong the parameters of load, deformation and material is derived. Furthermore, thestress of the contact interface, especially the tangential stress, is discussed. Secondly, according to the balance in the load of the cutting system, the elastic contactmechanics model is used to discuss the relationship of major parameters including theload, deformation and geological condition. The model can also be applied tocalculate the thrust and torque of tunnel shield roughly and the determination of theinfluential factors. At the same time, the distribution of stress on interface is obtained. The results given in the thesis, which is based on the analysis and simplify to themechanical characteristic of the tunnel cutting system, has been supported by theexperimental results and the related data from projects. Preliminary results indicatethat the simplified model can not only describes the mutual influence among the keyparameters, but also forecasts their trend of change.
