With the addition of the smart grid project in the "12th five-year plan", the grid willbegin a period of wholy construction. The application of energy storage technology is akey part in smart grid. The location and capacity of energy storage equipment has asignificant impact on the energy storage’s effect. Based on transient stability riskassessment, this paper presents a method of energy storage’s location and capacityoptimization,which uses risk index to assess energy storage’s effect considering a varietyof random factors in grid operation, and which provides a new idea of energy storage’slocation and capacity optimization.At first, this paper briefly introduces the significance of this study. The traditionalmethod to measure the effect of energy storage is directly comparing the poweroscillation curve in different energy storage’s location and capacity. This method issimple and clear, but it is subjective, lacking of accurate data. And more, it is hard toconsider the random factors in grid, which makes the conclusion not comprehensiveenough. Based on the shortcomings of the traditional method, the new idea is proposed.Also, the research about energy storage technology and transient stability risk assessmentare reviewed, which are the main part related with this study.Secondly, energy storage technology and its control-strategy are describedspecifically. This paper analyzes every energy storage technology and its application inpower system comprehensively, and makes deep research about energy storage system’scontrol-strategy, and then, selects the most suitable control-strategy for energy storagesystem in the case.Thirdly, this paper explains the concept of risk assessment, the risk index andprobability model used in transient stability risk assessment, and how to choose the system’s contingency set. And based on these, the specific process of transient stabilityrisk assessment method is built.Based on the all work above, finally, this paper proposes the method of energystorage’s location and capacity optimization using transient stability risk assessment,which is simulated on New England system. The result of simulation demonstrates thefeasibility and effectiveness of the method.
