As the development of scientific technology, the phasor measuring unit(PMU) whichis based on GPS technology has been successful designed. It can be used for measuring busvoltage amplitude and phase angle with accurate measurements.The As the introduction ofthe wide-area measurement system based on PMU has a great improvement for thetraditional state estimation and stability control of the grid. This paper mainly studies theWide area backup protection system based on PMU placement,first of all we do a lot ofsimulation analysis according to some existing PMU placement which can ensure the grid’sobservability,then find the suitable PMU placement for the Wide area backupprotection.According to the N-1security algorithm PMU placement we point out the Widearea backup protection of large power systems based on PMU placement, divided theprotection association area, make protection scheme and circuit breaker trippedstrategy.Through the IEEE-39node model system we do the Wide area backup protectionsimulation, simulation show that the system is efficient tracking due to switch from thedisplacement information grid topology changes.When the system fault occurred,we findout the Protection association area,Fault branch and make the Breaker trippedstrategy.Analysis the superiority which Wide area backup protection system has comparedto traditional backup protection.At last according to EPOCHS we do more Agent modelingsimulation to validate communication process and delay,during the simulation we establishthe power system model, configure the communication network parameters and set up allkinds of fault model. The simulation can accurately reflect the communication of eachAgent between a delay data, record all the procession of information interaction betweeneach Agent. The experimental results show that according to the platform the Wide areaprotection can meet the needs of the backup protection both on the performance and theaction delay.
