The power system is a complex dynamic system, the frequency stability is maintainedby the balancing between generation output and load. Due to the recent expansion of windpower, it decreases the power quality and safety. Flywheel energy storage technology issuitable for the grid regulation service and frequency control because of its fast responseand large capacity. This paper aims at provide a new solution to mitigate the great impact ofinstable power output of grid-connected large-scale wind farm. Therefore, this paperproposed an application of Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) used in AutomaticGeneration Control, discussed the storage capacity optimization solutions.First of all, this paper analysis the characteristics of the wind farm power output andits impact on power system frequency. Then illustrate the main issues we should solved onfrequency control when large-scale wind power integrated.Secondly, compared the performance characteristics and application conditions ofvarious storage methods, point out that the flywheel energy storage system is suitable forregulation service and frequency control for its fast response and large capacity. Explainsthe working principle of flywheel energy storage system, and established its mathematicalmodel.Thirdly, according to the comparison of generation and energy storage assets forfrequency regulation, proposed the frequency control strategy with FESS. For the differentcycles of load fluctuations, the frequency regulation tasks can be divided into two parts, oneis fast response task which is respond by FESS, the rest is respond by traditional generation.Then the paper proposed FESS capacity optimization method.The effectiveness of the proposed frequency control strategy with FESS was test onthe two area system model using Matlab7.1.
