The cause of high speed development of infrastructure to find out the requirement of engineering geology condition has become more and more strictly requirements. The traditional survey methods such as drilling and pitting are random, low efficiency, higher costs, destructive and easy to leak out. The limitation of methods is difficult to obtain a good effect in complex geological condition. Geophysical methods, especially the ground penetrating radar (referred to as GPR) as one technology of engineering survey has most commonly used. With its high resolution, detection speed, no damage to detect objects, it can get the information advantages of visual image in complex geological condition, which has been widely used and achieved satisfactory results. In this paper, the work of GPR theory and filed tests is used to study GPR in the dam collapse and granite weathering ball. And through processing and analysis, the size and distribution of the dam collapse and granite weathering ball are more accurate detection. The main content of this paper are as follows:(1) Summarized the development of GPR at home and abroad, as well as the way of using GPR application and also, cleared the meaning of this article and research topics.(2) Summarized the composition and basic theory of GPR system, the geotechnical engineering material’s characteristics; introduce the work principle of GPR and the common measurement methods; focuses on the analysis of technical parameters and measuring parameters of the GPR, and gives corresponding experience value.(3) In-depth analysis of data processing flow chart of GPR and some commonly used data interpretation method. Among them, on data processing flow in of each method in detail, and gives the radar images before and after processing show the corresponding treatment effect..(4) Selected two examples in complex geological condition.of GPR detection of the case studies. With the dam collapse detection as an example, this paper describes the principle of high density resistivity method, analyzing the basis of basis of GPR’s parameters and the radar image before and after processing. Through the analysis of the high density resistivity method and GPR detection results, it finds that the location and scale of anomalous body are consistent. With granite weathering ball detection as an example, this paper summed up the field of several typical radar images. Combined with drilling material, not only know the radar image characteristics of granite weathering ball, showing reflection wave with phase axis is tortuous and bifurcate, and further validation the accuracy of results.(5) Geophysical exploration has multiple results and should be selected suitable method to verify results. For security reasons, high density resistivity method is selected to verify the accuracy of GPR’s results in the dam detection of collapse; As strict requirement consideration for geological condition, the drilling methods is selected to verify the accuracy of GPR’s results. As above examples show that GPR have a good application prospect in complex geological condition, and can provide positive for the engineering construction.
