The earth structure buildings, which is relatively economic, are very common in the countryside. This traditional building has the advantages of convenient construction, simple construction process and low cost. However, due to its low bearing capacity and discreteness in material performance, this building tends to sever damage or even collapse when subjected to severe natural disasters (as heavy rain and snow disasters or earthquakes). It is an urgent problem that needs to be solved to ensure the bearing capacity of such earth structures. In our country, a large number of historical books documented that sticky rice-lime mortar, as a kind of traditional cementitious materials, is excellent in physical and mechanical properties. Many cultural relic constructions contain sticky rice-lime mortar.This paper summarizes the development process of domestic and foreign traditional cemen-titious materials, as well as studies carried out by modern researchers. This paper exhibits a lot of examples to show the great role the sticky rice-lime mortar plays in our country urban construction, water conservancy, tombs and etc. A simple presentation is made on the mech-anism of sticky rice-lime mortar and its application in the restoration of cultural relics. Further, this paper has finished the following studies to get a full understanding of the physical properties of sticky rice-lime mortar.1) Firstly, in order to find out whether sticky rice slurry will improve the surface hardness of lime mortar. Adding sticky rice slurry with different consistence(0%,3%,5%and10%)into the mortar blocks, the surface hardness of block was tested using LX-A at different curing stage respectively. It is shown that sticky rice slurry concentration and curing age both have a great influence on the surface hardness of the mortar blocks. Especially, in the56th day, the block with sticky rice(5%consistence) reaches the maximum surface hardness.2) Secondly, the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were tested by the hydraulic universal testing machine for getting the mechanical properties of sticky rice-lime mortar. The results show that the mortar with the sticky rice achieves a better performance than the original mortar. As the concentration of sticky rice mortar in block increase, their com-pressive strength and splitting tensile strength increase, then decrease in the later stage. Compressive strength and splitting tensile strength go up over time in the curing age, while the growth rate is fast at the initial stage, then slow down. The splitting tensile strength is about10%of the compressive strength. Actually, splitting tensile strength is mainly influenced by the curing age 3) Furthermore, taking the application of sticky rice-lime mortar in practical engineering into account, the sticky rice-lime mortar wall model experiment research was produced.The displacement and surface strain of the wall models were tested, and the stress and deformation capacity were analyzed. It demonstrates that the failure process of wall can be divided into three stages——crack, stability development of cracks and failure. But the scales of the cracks are different in different models. Compressive strength of the wall mixed with sticky rice is obviously higher than that without sticky rice. The test results show that compressive strength of sticky rice-lime mortar wall model is significantly lower than the compression strength of test block, and the performance of sticky rice-lime mortar wall is closely associated to surrounding factors such as construction technology and the external environment condition.4) Based on the experimental research, sticky rice-lime mortar wall model were simulated and analyzed under the vertical load for getting the information of its bearing capacity. The results show that the performance of sticky rice-lime mortar wall is significantly better than that without mixing sticky rice.In this paper, with the experimental study which is verified by the finite element numerical simulation (ABAQUS), it is shown that the concrete mixed with sticky rice can significantly improve the mechanical properties,which is meaningful for the reinforcement of rural housing.
