With the development of distribution network, lots of aggregated switchgears are appliedto MV&LV Power Network. But due to various factors such as equipment and runningenvironment, arcing faults in MV&LV busbars happen frequently. Arcing faults havecharacteristic as follows rapid expanding, unpredictability, great destructiveness, and couldcause an explosion and leads switchgears and busbars to burn. The present busbars of MV&LV Power Network are unable to clear arcing fault quickly, the application of rapid andeffective electric arc protections is of great practical significance.On the basis of analysing the arc fault’s physical properties, electric arc effect andrelevant maths models, the paper puts forward a rapid and effective electric arc protection,which detects ultrasound, fault current and arcing light. Then the paper does some research onthe action principle of arc protection as well as the basic structures, analyzes the reliabilityand control strategies, completes the design of protection. The reliability and selectivity of thearc protection has been improved, which is reformed by detecting ultrasound and consideringswitch positions.Finally, the paper introduces the arc protection scheme of a substation. The paper alsopoints out the different installation requirements of sensors for different kinds of switchgears;the result about debugs and switch driving tests, shows that the protection is selective, speedy,sensitive and reliable, which can realize the fast protection for busbar.
