As a new type of mechanical energy storage technologies with a wide application prospects, Flywheel energy storage technology got unanimous attention of domestic and foreign experts. As a storage device saving mechanical energy from electrical energy, the motor is an essential part of the flywheel energy storage system, energy exchange between electricity and mechanical is just relying on the accelerating and decelerating operation of the motor. So the situation of the whole flywheel storage system is directly decided to the motor running state. The control problem of the permanent magnet brushless DC motor used in flywheel energy storage system is studied in this paper.After reading domestic and foreign literature, this article classified and summarized the application and research status of the flywheel energy storage system in various industries firstly, focused on the research of motor control section. Then the article analyzed the principle of the brushless DC motor, Listed in the mathematical model, then presented a double-loop control method to achieve the motor speed control using PWM to regulate the motor terminal voltage. Aiming at reducing the current and the torque ripple appeared in flywheel energy storage system running in wide-range speed. Aiming at a smooth running of the motor used in flywheel energy storage system, the pwm-on-pwm method is used in motor control. Through detailed theoretical analysis, it’s easy to prove that the modulation method could effectively first reduce the current commutation torque ripple of the period, while avoiding the inevitable in the general pulse-width modulation non-commutation phase conduction phenomenon. Combination of simulation, this method was used to the motor control of the flywheel energy storage system, which verified the applicability of the modulation, the hybrid Fuzzy PI control system was built for the speed loop control, and the corresponding simulation was done. According to the requirements of the control system, the brushless DC motor controller was designed based on the TMS320F2812chip, and the key points of the controller hardware and software design was described.
