The large-scale of the power interconnections put forward more remands in the improving system stability, transmission capacity and optimizing the system operating mode. The flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) provide better way of resolution, and among them, the unified power flow controller (UPFC) plays an important role in enhancing the power system dynamic performance. With short circuit fault occurrence in the power systems, the series converter of unified power flow controller (UPFC) may be damaged because of bearing high voltage and large current. To solve the above problem a novel topology is presented:UPFC with transformer coupling novel SSFCL is connected through saturated coupling transformer.With the analysis of the interaction between the power system and the consideration of the characteristics of the saturated coupling transformer, this paper presents the modeling and simulation of the neotype UPFC-SSFCL under the two circumstances of the normal working state and the short-circuit state. To better restore the real performance of the UPFC-SSFCL, the better calculation and selection methods of DC reactor, DC capacitor are illustrated as well as the interaction analysis of unified power flow controller with fault current limiting device. At last, the simulation and experimental results are obtained based on the380V/3kVA prototype to verify the verification of the modified designation of the parameters of the primary order.
