The crane is widely used in industrial areas. Its development status is on behalf of thedevelopment of a country’s industrialization. In recent years, with the rapid development ofour country’s economy, the crane plays a more and more important role in social project. Atthe same time, the rapid development of economy raises a higher claim for the crane’s safetyin operation. The crane’s self-structure is very complex and contains lots of risk factors. Theaccumulative damage is inevitably produced in its long service process. With the long-termoverloaded work, the safety accidents happen increasingly. Once those happen, it’s mostlikely to bring about huge economic losses and casualties. Accordingly, it has importantsignificance for the crane to reduce or avoid a sudden failure by possessing the effectivereal-time health monitoring and finding the abnormal situation in time. The paper firstly didsome research on the previous health monitoring and then a new type of crane healthmonitoring system based on fiber Bragg grating(FBG),combined with wireless transmissiontechnology, was proposedFirstly, the paper analyzed the research results of the crane health monitoring at homeand abroad. After comparing the existing monitoring technology, the optical fiber Bragggrating sensing technology was selected for health monitoring of crane and expounded theprinciple of fiber Bragg grating. Then the overall design of the system was put forward. Thepaper introduced the composition and the function of hardware and software in the monitoringsystem in sub-module, and selected the hardware devices. A kind of fiber Bragg grating strainsensor applied to a crane health monitoring was designed and developed. The monitoringsystem, used the dedicated FBG sensors, could realize the real-time monitoring on the statusof crane. The monitoring information could be transmitted through the GPRS network to the remote clients. The system could realize that different clients might make real-timemonitoring at the same time.The paper made verification for the new crane health monitoring system in the laboratoryon the simulator of crane. The experimental results showed that the performance of the systemwas ideal. Then the system was applied to300tons of large gantry crane, after many tests inthe field, the system could measure the force condition on the crane accurately, and thissystem could also make online monitoring in real time for the health status of the crane.
