Particle damping technology is a new technology for passive vibration control. It can provide damping for vibrating structures through the impact and friction between particles which are filled in the structural cavities. It has a lot of advantages such as:it can be used in wide range environment, the structures of original system are modified very little, the effect of vibration absorption is notable, additional mass added to the original system is very little, etc.In this paper, through theoretical modeling and simulation, the vibration mechanism of the ellipsoid particle damping is studied particularly, and revolving around the key factors affecting the efficiency of vibration reduction, this paper explores the vibration reduction laws of ellipsoid particle damping.The main works are:(1) Basing on the previous researches and referring to elastic contact theory and the theory of ellipsoidal curvature radius, this paper builds the elastoplastic impact model of ellipsoid particle, and gets energy dissipation factor of the system in the end. Then it utilizes FEM software to make simulation and has proved the correctness of the theoretical model.(2) Giving the characteristic of geometrical shape of ellipsoid particle damping, using simulating software ANSYS and LS-DYNA, this paper explores the distributing law of impacting energy dissipation of different points of same ellipsoid, the energy dissipation law of different shapes of ellipsoid particle and the energy dissipation law of different sizes of ellipsoid particle. The simulating results indicate that the ellipsoid particles colliding by0degrees and90degrees have the maximum energy factor, while the particles colliding by30degrees have the the minimum energy factor; the ellipsoid particles whose polar radius are0.5mm and1.0mm have less energy factor than the ellipsoid particles whose polar radius are1.5mm,2.0mm and2.5mm; for different sizes of particles, even the sizes are extremly different, the energy factors are almost the same. (3) This paper also makes some simulation researches about the material parameters of ellipsoid particles during the impacting process, such as elastic modulus, yield limit and mass density. The simulating results indicate that under certain condition, when paticles have higher elastic modulus, mass density and lower yield limit, the effect of energy dissipation is better.(4) Basing on the law of energy dissipation of ellipsoid particle, this paper establishes free vibration model of cantilever beam whose free end is fixed by damping particles which have different geometric and material parameters. It also summaries the effects of vibration reduction of ellipsoid particles. The simulating results indicate that damping paticles are effective in reducing the vibration of cantilever beam.
