There are many problems in traditional automotive fuel pump, which is driven by DC motor, such as commutation spark, commutation noise, mechanical wear and short of life. Meanwhile, due to the use of electrically commutation and remove the vulnerable brush, brushless DC motor has attracted more and more attention and wildly use. Conventional brushless DC motor control should be installed position sensor; it brings increased installation costs, limitation of using occasion and reliability issues. Because of the harsh working environment, it is difficult for fuel pump to install position sensor. So how to use the right sensorless position control method to effectively control fuel pump has a very important application prospect, which not only improves the service life and bring some economic effect; but also offers the convenience of intelligent control of electric fuel pump.Based on the above mentioned argument, related research works have done as follow:(1) Describe the background and significance of this paper, sum up the research status of fuel pump and sensorless control strategy, and then analyzes their advantages and disadvantages.(2) Introduce the principle and structure of electronic automotive fuel pump and its drive systems; obtain the key elements in the progress of design.(3) Analysis several key issues of sensorless control technology, including the detection of motor position, start algorithm and speed control. A lot of experiments have been done to find out the suitable control theory for fuel pump BLDC drive.(4) Design a practical driven system which is used with sensorless control strategies to fuel pump. Base on this system, key elements have been studied, especially verify software algorithms. Experiments show that the designed driven system is able to achieve effective control of brushless DC motor and the deigned system solutions for fuel pump are sufficiently validated.(5) Due to the special work conditions of fuel pump, this paper design a test system for the fuel pump drive-controller, and it is useful for quality inspection in the process of production.
