At present, isolated intersection control is applied to intersections of the large andmedium cities. Due to lacking coordination with other intersections, the control styleleads to longer queues and unnecessary delays, decreases intersection efficiency.Especially, it becomes increasingly prominent, as traffic demand is growing. So it isnecessary to implement area-wide control at the conditional area. Based on this, theproject will begin to work from the structural features of China’s urban road network, analyze the urban traffic flow distribution characteristics, study the relevancy amonglinks and nodes, make a complex road network into simple road networks based on theartery as basic units and establish traffic control sub-area partition technology based onarterial superposition. Area signal control optimization objectives, timing optimizationmethods, control algorithm transition will be studied by using traffic control, traffic flowtheory, operations research, intelligent optimization and information detection technology, which will be suitable to China’s road structure, and traffic flow characteristics. Theresults of this research have important theoretical significance and practical value toenrich traffic control theory, improve the urban road network efficiency and reduce thetraffic jam. This paper mainly studies the content as follows:Firstly, this paper established the queue calculated model. Considering the volatilityof the traffic demand differences, this paper established two kind of the queue calculatedmodel-SQE model and LQE model by analyzing characteristics of vehicle arrival andevolution of queuing.Secondly, this paper designed saturated arterial signal optimization method. Thispaper research on optimization objectives selection of saturated arterial, then consideredtwo main factors of queuing: vehicle arrival rate and vehicle discharge rate, proposed the control strategy and timing method with optimization objectives of minimizing queuelength. Finally, this paper proposed coordinated control methods for area traffic. On thebasis superposition of arterial, this paper established optimization objective function ofnetwork control for the adjustment of timing parameters. Then, on the basis coordinatedtiming of all arterials in network, this paper established three-parameter optimizationmodel of cycle split and offset.
