As one of the most common structures using in the highway, the asphalt pavement bears important transportation task. In fact, the asphalt concrete is a kind of material that is sensitive to temperature. The environmental temperature has great effect on asphalt pavement perform. Both cracking caused by temperature decreasing and fatigue damage caused by temperature which changes gradually are main problems of the asphalt pavement damage. But in the current asphalt pavement design theory and in analysical methods the influence of temperature has not been taken into account. Due to the pavement structure completely exposed to the natural environment. It’s inevitable that the asphalt pavement is affected by the environmental temperature. Therefore the study on analysis of temperature field and the thermal stress for bituminous pavement has great value for selecting the pavement structure and pavement materials reasonably. Some FBG sensors packaged and designed by Institute of Earthquake Engineering of Dalian University of Technology are used in a real flexible pavement. Temperature and strain distribution of asphalt pavement caused by environmental temperature change are monitored for a long time. First, we laid a solid foundation for testing the data in the later by finding the relation between the fiber Bragg grating wavelength and temperature. The fiber Bragg grating sensors were embedded in different depth of asphalt pavement structure for monitoring the temperature and strain within the asphalt pavement structure in the testing road. The rule of temperature changing with time was obtained through the analysis of large amounts data in different depth of asphalt pavement structure. The rule of temperature at the same time points in different depth and the rule of strain were obtained.Based on the heat transfer theory, the numerical analysis model for bituminous pavement temperature field was built through the application of the ABAQUS finite element software. According to the results verified the feasibility of optical fiber grating temperature sensor in the measurement of the highway. In addition, based on the temperature field presented in this paper, the thermal stress changed with atmospheric temperature are analyzed for the asphalt pavement with given material and the physical parameters for each layers.
