China is rich in hydropower resources, it is a national key construction projects. While the western region is the richest area of the hydropower resource of our country, so China will build a number of world-class high concrete dams in the southwestern region. The seismic analysis of the dam is the important issue related to safety. The seismic response analysis of dam is based on mechanics of materials, also the finite element method is taken as an assistant method. The paper not only introduces the two methods, but also does a seismic research of the Yalong river Kala hydropower RCC gravity dam by both methods. Then, the seismic safety evaluation of the darn is completed.The stability analysis of both sides of the dam abutment is an important issue. Based on the theory, combining practical condition, the research of slope stability of Kala hydropower station RCC gravity dam is completed.The content of the paper can be summarized as the following aspects:(1) The theory of the mechanics of materials and seismic safety evaluation method. According to the standard spectrum, the seismic analysis of the over flow dam is studied which mainly includes the stress and strain of diffident key points in diffident conditions. Then according to the results, the seismic safety evaluation of the dam is completed. The results show that the dam compressive and tensile strength meet current seismic design specifications, and there is a large margin of safety.(2) Theory of finite element method and ANSYS numerical analysis. The paper builds two-dimensional and three-dimensional models by ANSYS to analyze the changes of the stress and strain of key points under different conditions and compare the results under two methods.(3) Finite element analysis of slope stability. After building the model of both sides of the dam abutment by ANSYS, using non-linear finite element, the paper analyze slope stability and deformation under different conditions by strength reduction method, also it determines the safety factors of slope stability.
