Recent years more and more scholars are dedicated to the research of fault-tolerant permanent magnet (FTPM) motor because of the high reliability and fault tolerance requirements proposed to the electric propulsion system. Since the special design of FTPM motor, the motor body has the capability of physical, electrical, thermal isolation and magnetic isolation, so that the FTPM motor can be fault tolerant. Also reasonable structure design can further improve the performance of the motor. The purpose of this paper is to design a FTPM motor for dual redundant motor drive system and make the optimal design from its parameters and simulation for its operating characteristics.Firstly, the basic principles of a FTPM motor design, identifies the magnet material, winding structure, number of phases, slots and poles were discussed in this paper. Secondly, the magnetic and electromagnetic calculation theory and the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method are introduced. Then the motor is designed, including the magnetic circuit, main dimensions, groove parameters and yoke parameters. After that, FEA software Ansoft Maxwell is used to verify the designed motor from flux density, magnetic field lines distribution, winding inductance, no-load back electromotive force (EMF), cogging torque and other aspects. Thirdly, the structure optimization is investigated from the notch and permanent magnet material sizes, including the winding inductance, no-load EMF and cogging torque, some relevant conclusions are obtained. Finally, the co-simulation is made through the speed closed-loop control system with hysteresis current control circuit which is built by using the Simplorer software and the Maxwell2D motor model. The fault-tolerant performance of the designed FTPM motor is verified by the simulation results in healthy and open-circuit fault conditions.
