The tailings dam is a special industrial buildings, its security and stability is essential. It not only directly related to the mining enterprises’normal production operations and its economic benefits, but also directly related to the life and property safety of the surrounding residents and the environment, as well as social stability. China is a multi-mine mining country, tailings project not only quantity, but also widely distributed, and most of them are the less stable upstream method dam, resulting in tailings frequent accidents. Thus, the tailings dam sliding stability analysis is the subject of very importance and practical significance.Geogrid reinforced soil technology can give full play to the soil’s compression performance and the geogrid’s tensile properties, improve the soil’s strength and deformation characteristics, enhance the soil structure’s stability, and the construction is simple, adaptable, attractive appearance, also it can acquire good engineering result and economic benefit. So now it has been widely used in practical engineering, such as geotechnical engineering reinforcement, protection and water conservancy, mining, construction, road and rail, and other fields. However, theoretical research work in this area is far behind in the application of engineering practice, and so far the research that reinforced soil technology is used in the tailings dam is rare.Based on the shortcomings of the limit equilibrium method to carry out the study of the geogrid reinforced mechanism and others, in this paper, the finite element method is used to explore the geogrid reinforcement mechanism, influence factors and their sensitivity, at last take a tailings project for example, comprehensive study the stability of the geogrid reinforced tailings dam. The following research work is included:Firstly, it summarizes the main engineering characteristics of the tailings dam and its impact on the national economy and people’s livelihood; and summarizes the history, development and current research of geosynthetics, focusing on the engineering properties and reinforcement mechanism of the geogrid.Secondly, surrounding the slope stability analysis method, through three examples of homogeneous slope, inhomogeneous slope and reinforced slope, apply the limit equilibrium method, the finite element strength reduction method, the finite element sliding surface stress method (the finite element limit equilibrium method) to analyse the slope stability, focusing on demonstration the finite element limit equilibrium method for slope stability analysis is applicability and propagable. Thirdly, based on Canadian geotechnical software GeoStudio, research the geogrid reinforcement’s role on slope stability, respectively considering the influence factors of the geogrid’s length, spacing, modulus and laying on the slope stability safety factor, the maximum lateral displacement, the critical slip surface and slope deformation, etc. And conclude some regularity conclusions with reference value, provide the basis for practical engineering design.Fourthly, take a tailings project for example, explore the impact of the upfront sub-dam’s stability for the construction of late sub-dam. And then draw on the useful conclusions of chapter III, to study the geogrid reinforced construction of the tailings sub-dam. Finally change the tailings dam building solution, not only to achieve the continue increasing the height of sub-dam, but also can improve the tailings dam slope ratio and total storage capacity, achieve good numerical results, provide technical basis and reference for the tailings dam design and construction.
