With the constant progress of science and technology of computational fluid mechanics, theapplication field of centrifugal pump is expanding rapidly and becomes extensive. And the openimpeller centrifugal pump also plays an important role on some occasions. At present, thetransmission medium of centrifugal pump becomes more and more diversified. Compared withthe conventional impeller, the open impeller only has part of the back shroud. Therefore, they areconvenient for manufacture. Because of the big clearance between the impeller and casing, it cantransmit the mediums containing fine sundry, resisting medium and so on. However, thecavitation, as the common problem in the hydraulic machinery, always constrains thedevelopment of the pump industry and affects the operational stability and reliability of the pump.In order to obtain the effects of different types of open impeller on the internal flow andcavitation performance of the centrifugal pump, numerical simulation and experiment areadopted to study the different types of open impeller centrifugal pump. In this paper, thecalculation with only water at different flow rates and cavitation calculation are carried out. Themain research contents are as follows:(1) The whole flow fields of the low-specific-speed centrifugal pump with different types ofopen impellers are completed by the three-dimensional modeling software Pro/E, and the mainflow fields contain inducer, impellers and volute. The two different impellers with straight bladeand bent blade are finished separately according to the actually requirement. Then the centrifugalpump with different types of impeller is imported in the Gambit for meshing and then simulatedby using CFD software Fluent. According to the simulation result, the affect of different typeimpellers on the pressure and velocity distributions in the pump are analysed and compared.(2) The research which is about the cavity phase distribution in the different type impellersfor the different NPSH value at the same time and the different type impellers for the sameNPSH value at the different time is carried out by the numerical calculation at cavitationcondition.(3) The experimental study on the different type open impellers is also carried out on thesame test bed in this paper. The experiment contents include the external performance test andcavitation performance test. According to the simulation results, the external performance curves at different flow rates and the cavitation performance curves at the design flow rate of thecentrifugal pump with different type impellers are obtained. In addition, the numerical simulationresults and experiment results are compared and analyzed.
