In recent years, crop growth monitoring technology has become one of the hot topics of the remotesensing research and application both in China and other countries of the world. Using the remote sensingtechnology to monitor the growth environment, situation and the dynamic growth changes of crops, canhelp local people correctly understand the growth situation of crops, the soil moisture and fertility of arableland, and timely monitor the diseases and pests. In addition, it can also help local government officers andpolicy makers to establish a series of corresponding measures for guiding famers to cultivate crops andmanage their arable lands, finally to realize the healthy growth and regional increase production of crops.Henan is one of the major agricultural provinces, and also a main wheat producing area in China. TheHenan people produce the amount of one-fourth wheat and one-tenth grain of the country on theone-sixteenth arable land in the total area of the country. The total production of grain in Henan Provincehas been ranking the first place for more than ten years that Henan is undertaking the important task ofnational food security. In the document of <The guidance of the State Council on the support of HenanProvince to accelerate the construction of the Central Plains Economic Area>, the Central Plains EconomicArea is put on the strategic position of “the important base of the national grain production and modernagricultural development”. Therefore, to carry out dynamic monitoring and quantitative assessment of thewinter wheat growth in Henan Province is not only to ensure the stable production and increase productionof wheat in Henan, but also to meet the needs for realizing the Central Plains Economic Area developmentstrategies and to achieve the strong guarantee of sustainable development in the whole country.Researches on the growth monitoring system of winter wheat in Henan are mainly based on the VGI.The VGI is a data acquisition technology system that it can help technician to collecte the growthinformation data of the crops, and then, we can extract the growth information of the crops from thecollected data, and analyze the growth conditions of winter wheat according to the extracted information,and finally present the results by maps. Users can use digital cameras, mobile phones and other mobiledevices to collect the data at different growth stages of the winter wheat, then uploading the data that withlocation information to the server by the Internet. The technician or experts can take image preprocessingand extract the coverage information from the image data. The planting area of winter wheat can be extracted by MODIS EVI data processing and also combining with the data of the administrative divisionsand the statistical data about sowing seed in Henan, The coverage of winter wheat of Henan can also be gotby using the information of the winter wheat coverage in sampled sites and combined with the planting areaof winter wheat in the whole province. By analyzing the above data and the Dimidiate Pixel Model, thegrowth situations of winter wheat can be successfully judged and finally the growth information can bereleased in the forms of map that is convenient for users such as farmers, agricultural technical sections andlocal government to inquiry and use. The main contents and study results of this thesis are as follows:Introducing the concept, characteristics, application and analyzing the remained problems ofVGI.Study on the data acquisition of the VGI about the winter wheat growth situation. By discussingthe principles of ground survey data collection, acquisition program and sampled sites, and alsocombining with the agronomic data about the growth situation of winter wheat to determine thedata acquisition time and cycles, at last to establish the ground monitoring database of the growthof winter wheat in Henan Province.By the temporal data of the MODIS EVI in the study area, to study the changes of EVI value inthe whole winter wheat growth period as well as in different stages of crop growth or in differentregions. Then, to extract the index of phonological character of the winter wheat. Finally,combing with the winter wheat growth agronomic parameters and geographic information data,to obtain the planting area of winter wheat in Henan Province.Contrasting the methods of extracting the coverage information of winter wheat from the digitalimage data, and studying the methods that more quickly extracts the wheat coverage information.Then by the principle of the Dimidiate Pixel Model form the image data, to extract the coverageof winter wheat. And with the extracted coverage information of winter wheat, the growthsituation analysis can be carried out by the model.Establishing the growth monitoring system of winter wheat based on the VGI by the means ofWebGIS technology, to realize the data interactively collected and inquired. Then finally torelease the information about the growth situations of winter wheat for all its users.The main innovation points of the research are as follows: Establishing the growth ground monitoring database of winter wheat. By researching on themethods of data acquisition and sampled points scheme, and also combined with the growth ofthe winter wheat agronomic data, to determine the acquisition time and cycle, finally build up agrowth ground monitoring database of winter wheat of Henan Province.Extracting the planting regions and area of the winter wheat in Henan Province. By using themulti-sources data including the remote sensing data, GIS data and the agronomic data based onVGI, the growth regions and area of winter wheat in Henan Province has been successfullyextracted.Mapping the winter wheat growth situation of the whole Henan Province and build the GrowthMonitoring System. By contrasting the coverage information extracted from the digital images,the winter wheat coverage information was more quickly extracted. Then the growth situation ofwinter wheat was analyzed by using the extracted coverage information that it makes map thewinter wheat growth situation of the study area become possible.and also the Growth MonitoringSystem can be built.This study carried out a lot of work from the data acquisition to system establishment. However,because of the limited time, there are also many issues needed to be further studied, such as the question ofthere is only one single indicator used in this study, and the growth monitoring model and the monitoringfunction of the system also needed to be further optimized and improved. These questions will be solved inour further study.
