Tree height is a important measurement factors in the forest survey, which is a significant basis for the estimation of site quality, forest growth and story division. At present, most staffs are at working in this situation that they offten carry the measuring instruments and walking in the forest to measuring where the surface is to complex, it is not only reduce the work efficiency, and bring the mind and body fatigue to staffs. With the progress of science and technology, measuring instrument is continuous upgrading in the change, but the work of surveyors has not been changed. Due to tracked vehicles have a stronger cross-country travel than wheeled vehicles, especially in the forest. So it is the focus of this study that how to using the superiority of tracked vehicles in forest measurements and combine the tracked vehicles and the advanced measurement techniques, in order to reducing the intensity work of the surveyors.In this paper, we designed the structural of the laser measured tree analyzer and crawler chassis which are on the basis of understanding of the tree measuring instruments at home and abroad, and crawler chassis development. The structural design of laser measuring instrument including measurement devices and control devices. The design of the measurement devices including the emitter device and the corner agencies; Control devices are designed primarily to its shell. The main part of the design of the crawler chassis contain the crawler parameters, the driving wheel, supporting wheels and frame, and designed three-dimensional modeling of vehicle rear axle through the Pro/ENGINEER, and analyze the stress by the software of ANSYS analysis.This paper proposed two measuring methods which are the "three-parameter" and "the four-parameters" measurement method, based on summing up the traditional tree height measurement methods, established the mathematical model of the two measurement methods and analyze its accuracy. Finally, it is determie the accuracy range of the two measurment methods and more accuate method of measurment through experiments. Meanwhile, it is simulate the process of measuring tree height and vehicles through the forest obstacle by the Pro/ENGINEER software, determined the measurement range of the measuring instrument on the tracked chassis and several situations of vehicles through obstacles.This study and design of tracked and laser tree height measurement provide convenience and security for the forest staffs, a new way for the tree height measurement and a directiono for the future development of forest measurement equipment.
