Elicitors can induce the plant secondary metabolites in tissue cultures, and it is an excellentapproach to study the signal transduction, which can help us to understand the plant secondarymetabolites. The phytohormone, special elicitors and plant growth regulators, has been widelyused to stimulate the accumulation of important secondary metabolites. This work investigatedthe effects of ABA, GA3and ethephon on the production of phenolic acids, growth and the keyenzymes in the hairy roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge which has been established in our lab inorder to provide knowledge about the signal transduction of phenolic acids and the. The mainconclusions were the following:(1) ABA could induced the production of growth and higher ABA inhibitor the growth inhairy roots of S. miltiorrhiza Bunge; ABA induced the accumulation of caffeic acid considerably, and the effect on the contents of coffee acid show positive correlation; As for the RA and LAB,the low dosage of ABA simulated the production;the ABA biosynthetic inhibitor Fluridone candecreases ABA’s the effect; ABA activated the activity of PAL and TAT, but the impact werediscriminating, when treatment with ABA and Fluridone, the inducing were declined.(2) GA3increased the production of LAB and RA but did not influence the accumulation ofCA; when treatment with its biosynthetic inhibitor paclobutrazol, the effects could be blocked; inaddition, the GA3activated the PAL and TAT activity, but applied with paclobutrazol, the keyenzymes activity declined and in Consistent with the accumulation of phenolic acids.(3) Eth could induced the production of phenolic acids and expressed positive correlation, aswell as activated the biosynthetic enzymes activity; combination Eth with its biosyntheticinhibitor CoCl2indicated that CoCl2could curbed the Eth-induced the phenolic acidsaccumulation and the enzyme activity, the results suggested that the impacts of Eth on theaccumulation of phenolic acids in the hairy root of S. miltiorrhiza via the PAL and TAT enzymes, and the increased the production of phenolic acids.(4) There was an antagonism between ABA and GA3. ABA and ethephon showed asynergistic effect on the accumulation of RA and LAB, and GA3and ethephon had the sameeffect. The result would provide us the evidence to understand the interactions between ABA, GA3and Eth, as well as the effects of hormones and interactions between them on the productionof phenolic acids in the hairy root of S. miltiorrhiza.
