In recent years, as people get more and more aware of pomegranate’s nutritional value, research on pomegranate has become a hot topic now. Pomegranate is abundant in China;meanwhile, the planting area is continually expanding. And there is still a considerable spaceto make a comprehensive and full use of pomegranate. Polyphenols is an important materialbasis of the physiological activity of pomegranate, and for pomegranate, there is still nosystematic research on the polyphenols content of different varieties and parts. This articletries to provide a foundation for comprehensive utilization and deep processing ofpomegranate, through a comparative analysis of polyphenol contents in different parts of5representative kinds of pomegranate cultivated in China. The study, using phosphomolybdic tungstic acid method, compares and analyses thecontent of polyphenol and tannins in skin, flesh, seeds, juice and leaves of ilex macropodasoft-seed pomegranate, Redskins sour pomegranate, Redskins sweet pomegranate, Taishanred pomegranate, Yunnan sour pomegranate, and concludes that the Yunnan sourpomegranate’s content is a little higher than other varieties, and that Redskins sweetpomegranate’s is the lowest, the other three varieties’s are close. In the different spot thepolyphenol and tanning varies in this following order: Peel> Pulp>Leaves> Seed, Juice, andthe total polyphenol content respectively is: Skin20-30%, Pulp19-27%,Leaf7-10%, Seed0.7-1.2%,Juice0.12-0.19%, the total tanning substance content: Skin20-24%, Pulp16-21%,Leaf0.8-2.4%, Seed0.4-0.7%, Juice0.08-0.14%. Simultaneously comparativeanalysis on polyphenol and tanning of ilex macropoda soft seed pomegranate in differentmaturity leads that along with pomegranate’s maturity, the polyphenol and the tanningsubstance content instead reduces.Based on the research above, this article also compares the content polyphenol gallic acid, punicalin, punicalagin and ellagic acid:four main ingredients of polyphenol,in the differentparts of ilex macropoda soft seed pomegranates and five other different pomegranate varietiesin three different maturity, with the methods of highly effective liquid phase chromatography, which can simultaneously examine these four kinds of polyphenols, has a good linear relationship, and can present an exact and precise result. The content of punicalagin is highestin granatum, pomegranate pulp, and pomegranate juice, occupying about50%of thegranatum polyphenol content;. No punicalagin was found in the pomegranate seeds. In leavesthe content of ellagic acid is highest. According to the comparison of the content of these4kinds of polyphenol in pomegranate peel and pomegranate pulp: punicalagin> ellagic acid>punicalin>gallic acid, in pomegranate juice: punicalagin> gallic acid> ellagic acid>punicalin, in pomegranate leaf: ellagic acid> punicalagin> punicalin> gallic acid, inpomegranate seeds: ellagic acid> gallic acid. Punicalagin and punicalin aren’t detected. This article conducts a systematic research on the polyphenol content of different varietiespomegranate and their different parts, in order to provid an essential data and a scientific basisfor the pomegranate resources’ comprehensive utilization in China.
