In recent years, human fishing capacity has exceeded the bearing ability to marinefishery resources and cause problems to marine fishing sustainable development.Therfore, effective momitoring of fishing vessel in fishing ground become necessary.Monitoring method of fishing boats mainly includes: shore-based radar monitoring,patrol vessel monitoring, GPS position monitoring and monitoring with satellite remotesensing.This article has focused on the relation between the length、width and length/widthdata of fishing vessel from field investigation and those fishing vessel geometric dataobtained form RADARSAT-2images through the visual interpretation with the fishingvessel sailing direction and speeds considered. Main achievements of this study are:(1)Review the history and current situation of remote sensing particularly on thevessel monitoring, determine the basic method of fishing vessel montioring withRadarsat.(2) Summarize the remote sensing technology and particularly the processing method ofSAR image data used in this study.(3) Collected fishing vessel geometrical data including material qualitative、length、width and other data from13fishing porta in Shazikou,Huang dao,Shi dao,Fengcheng and fuxin of Shandong province obtain the geometrical characteristics of thefishing vessel with fishing vessels Google Earth measurement data and documents ofdata.(4) Use ENVI software to process4scene Radarsat-2images with HH, HV andVV polarized modes and5.2x4.7,12.5x12.5,6.25x6.25meter resolution repectively,main procedures including data read, radiation correction, geometric correction,atmospheric correction in pretreatment and filtering processing. gray scale correction in post processing.(5) Sea background and vessel length, width, gray data were extracted formRADARSAT-2processed image by the visual interpreting in addition, sailing directionand speed of fishing vessels were considered for correcting. Radarsat-2derived fishingvessel geometric data.(6) Analysis of in situ measurd fishing vessel data and the data retrived fromRADARSAT-2image was conducted in order to improve the accuracy of the fishingvessel monitoring.
