Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) was one of the major serious insect pests of eggplant. Solanum melongena L. It can cause decrease of eggplant yield and quality, and cause great economic loss. In order to clarify its damaging mechanism to eggplant, improve the controlling skill and breed resistant variety, the selectivity and fitness of B. tabaci to eggplant variety, physiological and biochemical traits of eggplant damaged by B. tabaci, and the activity of protective and detoxification enzymes of B. tabaci fed on eggplant were systematically studied in this paper. The main results were as follows:1. Selectivity and fitness of B. tabaci were significantly different among the twenty tested varieties of eggplant. B. tabaci preferred Zenfengjuqie, No.1Yinqie, and Yuanzhongzichangqie. It had least preference for Ziguanqiewang, Zihongchangqie, Texuanzichangqie, Zibochangqie and Hainanyeqie.There were significant differences in generation duration and survival rate of B. tabaci among the tested varieties of eggplants. The generation duration of B. tabaci was the longest (18.2d) on Hainanyeqie, whereas it was the shortest (15.0d) on the Zihongchangqie and Kuaiyuanqie. The generation survival rate of B. tabaci was the lowest (49.8%) on Hainanyeqie, and it was the highest (83.9%) on Zengfengjuqie.2. The physiological and biochemical characteristics of8different variety eggplants damaged by B. tabaci were investigated. The results showed that there were significant difference in the contents of chlorophyll, soluble sugar, soluble protein and proline and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) among different eggplant varieties. The contents of chlorophyll from Hainanyeqie was obviously higher than those from CK. The contents of soluble sugar of Zibochangqie was significantly higher than those of any other varieties except for Heimamoqie among all tested eight varieties. The level of soluble protein from Chaojiuyeqie was the highest, which was significantly higher than those from other varieties. It was lowest from Hainanyeqie, and it was obviously lower than those from others. The level of proline from Chaojiuyeqie and Hainnanyeqie was significantly higher than those from others. The activity of SOD was the highest from No1.Yinqie, and it was significantly higher than those from Hainanyeqie, which was the lowest among all tested varieties. The activity of POD was obviously higher than CK. Therefore, the Hainanyeqie, Zibochangqie and Ziguanqiewang was resistant variety to B. tabaci3. The activity of the protective and detoxifying enzymes of B. tabaci fed on the eggplants variety were significantly difference. The POD activity of B. tabaci fed on Hainnanyeqie and Zengfengjuqie was obviously higher than those fed on other varieties, and it was the lowest from Ziguanqiewang and Heimamoqie. The SOD activity of B. tabaci fed on Ziguangqiewang and Heimamoqie was significantly lower than those fed on others, on the contrary, it was obviously higher from Sanyueqie than Zengfengjuqie. The activity of CarE and GSTs of B. tabaci fed on Hainanyeqie was significantly higer than other varieties. The activity of CarE and GSTs of B. tabaci was lowest from Ziguangqiewang and Heimamoqie, respectively.
