Objective To compare the postoperative complications following laparoscopic andopen radical resection for colorectal cancer. Methods From January2000to September2011,1344patients with colorectalcancer were divided into two groups prospectively and nonrandomly, laparoscopicsurgery(LP)group (n=910) and open surgery(OP)group (n=434). The postoperativecomplications were compared between two groups.Results48patients (5.3%,48/910) in laparoscopic group were converted to openoperation. Patients in LP group had less blood loss, as compared with those in OPgroup, and there was no difference in operative time between both groups. The overallpostoperative complication rate was20.3%in LP group and25.3%in OP group(P<0.05, χ~2=4.316). No statistical differences were observed between two groups, asregard postoperative anastomotic leak, anastomotic bleeding, chyle leak, bladderdysfunction, but postoperative intestinal obstruction, wound infection rate andpulmonary infection in LP group was significantly lower than that in OP group. Conclusion The overall postoperative complication rate in laparoscopic surgerygroup is significantly lower than that in open surgery group.
