Background and ObjectivesIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disease in the digestive system, which is common in the world. It is generally accepted that IBS symptoms are caused by a variety of factors. Some recent data suggests that IBS and small intestinal bacteria growth (SIBO) may have a certain correlation. Glucose hydrogen breath test (GHBT) was adopted to diagnose SIBO, to study the difference of the SIBO rate between IBS patients and the healthy volunteers and to observe the incidence of the difference between the IBS-diarrhea(IBS-D) patients and IBS-constipation (IBS-C) patients, to analyze the relationship between the IBS and SIBO.Research objects and MethodsForty-two cases of patients met inclusion criteria in the Department of Gastroenterology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from March2011to January2012. Thirteen cases of healthy volunteers were the workers in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. Forty-two cases with irritable bowel syndrome(test group) and13healthy volunteers (control group) were studied. According to the character of stool, the42cases of IBS were divided into diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) group and IBS (IBS-C) group of constipation type. All participants received GHBT for detection of SIBO, recording the patient’s symptoms, the positive of SIBO and all value of hydrogen density. Comparing the positive rate and the breath hydrogen concentration value about the experimental group and the control group, we could further confirm the relationship between IBS and SIBO according to the data.ResultsIn the IBS group of42cases,30cases expressed SIBO and the positive rate was71.43%. In the healthy group of13cases,1case had SIBO and the positive rate was7.69%. The rate of statistical comparison in two groups had a significant difference (P<0.05). The SIBO-positive rate in IBS-D group and in IBS-C group were68.18%and75%respectively, the rate of statistics in two groups had no significant difference (P>0.05).ConclusionsThe positive rate of SIBO is significantly higher in the IBS group than that in the control groups, IBS and SIBO are closely related. However, the positivity rate of SIBO between IBS-D group and IBS-C group is not significant different.
