Objective We explored the effect of renin–angiotensin on cytokines in hypothalamicparaventricular nucleus (PVN) in the exaggerated sympathetic activity observed in HF.Methods Heart failure rats were made by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery.Sham-operated control (SHAM) or HF rats were treated for4weeks through PVN infusion witheach ACE blocker-Enalapril (EPI,0.25μg/h) or aCSF for4week.Results Compared with SHAM rats, plasma levels of norepinephrine, plasma and hypothalamusof IL-1β, LVEDP, WH/BW and LW/BW were increased in HF rats (P<0.05). The maximal rateof rise and decline of ventricular pressure(dp/dtmax) decrease in HF rats (P<0.05). PVN infusionof enalapril attenuated the decreases in PVN and plasma of IL1-β, plasma levels ofnorepinephrine, LVEDP, WH/BW and LW/BW in HF rats (P<0.05). The dp/dtmax isincreased (P<0.05).Conclusion Renin–angiotensin in the PVN modulates IL1-β which could account forexaggerated sympathetic activity in HF.
