Purpose:The purpose of this investigation was to explore a field test to predict maximal oxygen consumption of healthy adults aged40to49years using a1-km walk test. Methods:Maximal oxygen consumption was determined in64healthy adult subjects (males=30, females=34) aged40to49years using a bicycle protocol. Each subject performed a1-km walk as fast as possible, and the1-km walk test was repeated again twice. Heart rates and walking time were monitored and recorded at the end of the walk. Multiple regression analysis to predict maximal oxygen consumption yielded the following predictor variables:heart rates (HR) and walking time (WT) at the end of the walk; sex; age; height; weight. Results:The best equation was: V02max(L*min-1)=6.703+0.483xSEX+0.015xWEIGHT (kg)-0.018XHR(bpm)-0.379×WT(min) R=0.851, R2=0.724, R2adj=0.706, SEE=0.367(L*min-1), SEX:male=1, female=0Comparing observed and predicted maximal oxygen consumption values using a leave-one-out cross-validation resulted in RLOOCV=0.826, SEELOOCV=0.378(L*min-1). Conclusion:The results indicate that this1-km walk test protocol provides a valid field test to predict maximal oxygen consumption of healthy adults aged40to49years.
