Under the guidance of the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), based on the experience on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) of Professor Jinshi, this paper summarizes and discusses Professor Jinshi’s academic experience and thought of treatment on SLE based on syndrome differentiation, and lets Professor Jinshi’s academic experience and thought of treatment on SLE further guide the application of Chinese medicine on SLE. There are four parts in this paper. The first part discusses Professor Jinshi’s understanding on the etiology and pathogenesis of SLE, and it also points out the complication and variety of SLE. Only exopathogen or internal injury is not enough to reflect the complication of SLE, both together are beneficial to grasp the etiology and pathogenesis of it from overall perspective. In this part, Professor Jinshi’s recognition on SLE is explained in detail:the basic pathogenesis is that kidney-Yin deficiency is the Ben of SLE, retaining of stagnant toxin is the Biao of SLE, and kidney deficiency and stagnant toxin is the key of pathogenesis. The second part summarizes Professor Jinshi’s clinical experience and characteristics on SLE by analyzing his clinical cases of it in recent five years, including the rules of the symptoms, pathogenesis, treatments, and the prescriptions in the cases. According to Professor Jinshi’s three major characteristics on treating SLE, his experience on treating SLE and his idea obtained of differentiation and treating related damaged organs are discussed. His three major characteristics on treating SLE are "Tonifying the kidney of poison is the primary principle, and Langchuangjing is the basic description.""Centered on the treatment based on syndrome differentiation; accommodate nimbly and not to be restricted by conventions.""Based on the TCM and refer to the west medicine, treatment based on syndrome differentiation combined with disease differentiation." Besides, the combination mechanism of his description and my reflection of them are all explained as a reference resource for learners. The third part introduces Professor Jinshi’s treatment experience on variable manifestations of SLE, such as fever, erythema, rash, alopecia, red cells decrease, white blood cells decrease, blood platelet decrease, xerostomia, Raynaud phenomenon, arthralgia and oral ulcer. Besides, how to flexibly deal with the priority of each symptom, the key point of differentiation and his reflection of medication are also discussed. The fourth part arranges nine representative cases, explains them and then analyzes Professor Jinshi’s rules of description, his special comprehension, his idea obtained of differentiation and treatment and his train of thought in treating SLE. Therefore, Professor Jinshi’s academic and clinical experiences on SLE in the three parts above are vividly revealed on the paper. It is beneficial for the learners to follow the rules. From the ten representative cases, the learners are able to compare around and obtain the significant teachings of Professor Jinshi’s academic and clinical experiences on SLE.The appendix reviews the recognition of the name of SLE in ancient TCM literature and the status quo of SLE research both domestic and aboard which helps to comprehend new trends, elucidate existent questions, prospect new trains of thought.
