objective To investigate the incidence, clinical symptoms, pathological characteristics, treatment and prognosis of central nervous system tumors in childhood. Methods During the period from1999to2009,468cases central nervous system tumors of children (<16years) were retrospectively analyzed according to WHO2007classification in Tianjin medical university general hospital department of neurosurgery. Results Intracranial and spinal tumors were431cases (92.1%) and37cases (7.9%), suptentorial288cases (67.0%), infratentorial143cases (33.0%).Male and female incidence rate is1.67:1, and the incidence increased with age growing. Intracranial hypertension was the most common onset symptom. The most common types of intracranial tumor followed by astrocytoma (26.5%), germ cell tumor (15.5%), craniopharyngioma(12.5%). medulloblastoma (10.2%) and ependymoma tumors (7.4%). The most common types of spinal cord tumor was schwannoma (48.6%), astrocytoma (21.6%) and mesenchymal tumor (13.5%). The2-year survival rate of patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy/chemotherapy was85%,and the5-year survival rate can reach65%.Conclusions Incidence of childhood nervous system tumors was mostly male, suptentorial more than infratentorial, and the most common type was astrocytoma. The clinical features was related with tumor location and age. Surgical treatment was still the main mefuod, and surgery combined with radiotherapy/chemotherapy improve the prognosis. Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of surgery combined with low-doses radiotherapy on intracranial germinoma in children. Methods During a10-year period from1999to2009,54cases of surgery combined with low-doses radiotherapy on intracranial germinoma in children(<16years of age) were studies retrospectively.34tumors were located in pineal region,10tumors were in pineal and sellar region,4tumors were in pineal and invades adjacent ventricle,and3tumors in basal ganglia. All patients were pathologically confirmed by the germinoma.Surgery combined with low dose (25~35Gy) radiotherapy were done for the patients, and46cases were followed-up.Results87%(40/46) cases showed no tumor recurrence by MRI, and quality of life improved for theses patients.6cases relapsed after treatment by surgery and radiotherapy. and the results were poor. Conclusions Surgery combined with low-doses radiotherapy can improve efficacy and survival of children with intracranial germinoma.
