Objective The purpose of the study was to explore the mental health characteristic of thevarious of left-behind children in rural, and to evaluate the effect of comprehensiveintervention, and to provide evidence for improving mental health situation of the left-behindchildren.Methods The1687left-behind students from six county primary and middle schools wereselected and investigated with Symptom Checklist-90(SCL-90), which was used todetermine psychological health status of the students. The psychological intervention wasgiven for six months, the test subjects were investigated with psychological measurementagain. A pre-and post-test control group design was implemented. The data of questionnaireswas entered with EpiDate3.0, and analyzed by statistics with SPSS16.0.Results From the baseline investigation reports, the mental health situation of childrenleft-behind is not optimistic. The positive rate of psychological problems is27.56%(95%CI=25.62%~29.91%). The girls’ mental health situation is better than boys’, the scores ofsomatization, obsessive-compulsive, hostility and psychoticism were differentsignificantly(P<0.05). Whose guardian was father, their scores of somatization andinterpersonal sensitivity were the highest in all guardians. Whose guardian was other relationsor neighbors, their scores of obsessive-compulsive was the most significant.(P<0.05).At theend of intervention, the positive rate of psychological problems is23.86%(95%CI=21.80%~25.92%). There are two independent variables, one is a permanent job which motherhas, the other is the close relationship with classmates. The boys’ scores of somatization,obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility and psychoticism were higher thangirl’s, and the scores of obsessive-compulsive and psychoticism were significant (P<0.05).All of the scores were remarkable differently among guardians (P<0.05). Whose guardian wasother relations or neighbors, their scores were higher than others’. The nine items scores ofleft-behind children whose guardian was mother were the lowest. In the listening aspects, Thenumber of left-behind children helping by themselves is decreased markedly, but to theirparents, classmates, and teachers for help. Compare to the before and after intervention, theboys’ scores of somatization, hostility, photic anxiety and paranoid ideation were decreasedmarkedly, the girls’ scores of photic anxiety is decreased markedly. The boys’ effect ofintervention is better than girls’. The nine items scores of left-behind children whose guardianwas father or mother were decreased significantly in the nine items. Whose guardian wasgrandparents, their scores of obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression,hostility, photic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism were decreased markedly.Whose guardian was other relations or neighbors, their scores of somatization, anxiety,phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism were increased markedly (P<0.05).Conclusion When parents work outside, the left-behind children will cause psychologicalproblems. The comprehensive intervention is feasible and effective. The girl in the mental health situation is better than boy, but intervention not as effective as boy. The psycho-socialintervention is more effective in mental health improvement to left-behind students whoseguardian is father or mother than others. With multi-dimension analysis, there are twoindependent variables, one is a permanent job which mother has, the other is the closerelationship with classmates. Their intervention effects are remarkable.
