Objective:The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes on facial symmetry in different-year-group patients with mandibular deviation who have orthodontic treatment. Methods:A total of30patients with mandibular deviation was included, and they were divided into two groups by age. Adolescent group was aged from12to16and there were15members. Patients who were between23and28were named adult group. All the patients comply with the standards:Angle III with mesilclusion, concave facial profile, montion deviation over3.0mm,with no obviously asymmetric in width of upper and lower dental arch, with no orthdontic history, no injury, tumor, inflammatory and other diseases on craniofacial skeletal. Every patient had PA cephalometic radiograph and facial photograms before and after orthdontic treatment. The asymmetry ratios of the facial will be calculated. All of the data were analyzed with SPSS13.0software package for group t test.Result:1. In the adolescent group, before orthdontic treatment, the asymmetry ratios of Mas and Max were lower than5%which is in the normal range. While asymmetry ratios of Go and Ag were much higher than5%.and the Me deviation was over3.0mm. After the treatment, the abnormal ratios were obviously lowered to normal range. The data of facial photogram was in accordance with that of PA cephalometic radiograph. 2. In the adult group, before orthdontic treatment, the asymmetry ratios of Mas and Max were upper than5%,and the asymmetry ratios of Go and Ag were also higher than5%with the Me deviation over3.0mm. After the treatment, the abnormal ratios were lowered slightly. The changes were lower than the adolescent group. The data of facial photogram was in agreement with that of PA cephalometic radiograph while the ratios of soft tissue were slightly lower than the hard tissue.Conclusions:1. Of all ages.the facial asymmetry ratios on patients with mandible deviation was dropped from lower1/3to upper1/3.The older the patient was,or the longer the malocclusion existed, the higher the mid1/3asymmetry ratio was.2. The asymmetry ratios of the soft tissue on both groups were in accordance with that of the hard tissue of each group, while soft tissue asymmetry ratios were slightly lower than hard tissue in adult group.3. After orthdontic treatment, the facial symmetry was highly improved in adolescent group, especially on the lower3/1of the face. While the improvement in adult group was limited. Thus, the study suggested that early treatment of mandible deviation was very needed.
