Objective:To investigate the complications and their risky factors of spinal tuberculosis treated by surgery.Method:706patients who were clinically diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis and underwent either posterior surgery or posterior-anterior surgery or anterior surgery from January2004to January2011in Department of Spine Surgery of Xiangya Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Patients who were followed up for2years entered into this study and amounted to490cases.All patients were categorized into3groups based on surgical approach, namely group a-p(n=256),group p(n=187) and group a(n=47).Patients in group p were divided into two groups based on whether the surgical indication of surgical approach is adopted appropriately. We recorded all the complications occuring during the whole treament. The risky factors were analyzed in a statistic method-Logistic regression.Results:.Complications occured in54cases totally which consisted of33cases in group a-p,16cases in group p and5cases in group a.A significance can be noted in comprasion of the incidence of complications of the two groups of group p. According to the results of Logistic regression the risky factors below had p-value less than0.05.They are chemotherapy (OR=5.784), immobilization(OR=3.026), surgical indication(OR=2.190), and nutrition status(OR=5.784).Conclusion:1Chemotherapy, nutrition status, immobilization and surgical indication have a close relation with complications in the surgically treated spinal tuberculosis.2The main reason of complications of posterior surgery is the inappropriate surgical indication, not posterior surgery itself.3The complications of posterior surgery are rarely seen in the treatment of monosegmental spinal tuberculosis with confined cold abscess.
