The attempt to stimulate selected groups of neuromuscular by electriccurrent has proven to be an effective way to intervene in a variety ofneurological disorders. Over years, researchers have used electricalstimulation to provide controllable limb function in paraplegics andquadriplegics, sensation of sound in the profoundly deaf, perception of lightspots in the visually impaired, and suppression of intractable pain. Whenstimulation is used to stimulate motor neurons and elicit controllable musclecontractions, it is called Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). Over the lasttwo decades, three generations of FES systems have been developed and usedwith various degrees of success. In the first generation, the stimulatorcircuitry was constructed using discrete devices assembled on medium-sizedboards using various hybrid techniques. The second generation systems usedmicroelectronics techniques to reduce the stimulator dimensions. The thirdgeneration systems have used microelectronics techniques and miniaturehybrid surface-mount components that can be implanted in numerousquantities near the individual targets. This thesis introduces a wireless implantable micro-stimulator based onZigBee protocol. This micro-stimulator system has low power consumption MCU and a dual operational amplifier circuit voltage-controlled constantcurrent source. This constant current source could generate the stimulatecurrent to selected group of neuro-muscular. This thesis includes as follows:After reading the literatures, the status and trends of development ofimplantable micro-stimulator are analysed. In this paper, thecharacteristics of the implantable micro-stimulator circuit are comparedand determined the design of circuit in this paper. For the purpose of reducing the power consumption and circuit scale, thegoal of design is to minimize the number of devices. At the same time, low power consumption device is used in the design. After researchingand analyzing the characteristics and requirements of implantablemicro-stimulator circuit, CC2430is applied as the MCU, which iscompatible with the ZigBee protocol.According to the requirements of stimulating signal, the dual operationalamplifier circuit voltage-controlled constant current source is applied inthe design. It is a micro-scale and low power consumption FES signalsource circuit.System integration of wireless implantable micro-stimulator is finished. Then the design of hardware and software are completedDebugging the processed PCB and testing the design functions.Discuss the design of FPGA-based micro-stimulator. Comparing it withwireless implantable micro-stimulator.
