In the period of social transition, with the deepening of social and economic reform social competition is intensifying. The re-combination of labor force, changes in population and family structure and weakening of the existing social support networks make the predisposing factors of mental illness increasing. According to the statistics of the Third National Mental Health Conference, of all mental disorders prevalence rate has risen to13.47‰. But the current situation of China’s mental health rehabilitation is not optimistic:the form of closed treatment, drug treatment as the main method, the social functions of the mental patients is ignored.Through field research in the W Mental Health Center, I conducted a survey of the disability of the mental patients’social functions. This paper intends to do a feasibility analysis on social work involved in the field of mental health through group work methods. And then, from the mentally ill, the family members of patients and medical staffs’ point of view analyze the system of social work involved in the rehabilitation of the psychiatric hospital model. I will introduce and assess the two projects of occupational and recreational therapy and health education of families. And I synthesize the three existing problems:mental health social workers’professional level is not high; mental health social work system defects; poor external environment mental health social workers work in. To solve these problems, appropriate counter-measures are proposed on the basis of reason analysis:improve the professional level of mental health social workers; to strengthen the institutional building of the mental health social work; improving the external environment the mental health social workers work in.
