Object:By observing the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the prevention and treatment of head and neck cancer radiation side effects, to explore more effective ways to improve the tolerance to radiotherapy and quality of life of head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy.Methods:Choose60head and neck cancer patients who were treated with radical ordinary radiotherapy alone for the first time (radiation doseā‰„60Gy),randomly divided them into traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) group (30cases) and control group (30cases). The TCM group synchronously took chinese medicines at the beginning of radiotherapy (North littoralis, heterophylla, Adenophorae, Ophiopogon, astragalus, wolfberry fruit, angelica, Scutellaria, forsythia, villosum, yams, rehmanniae,, moutan, three seven, turtle shell, licorice),while radiotherapy alone in the control group. Treating for six weeks, according to the changes of symptoms before,in and after the middle of treatment, evaluate the effects of treatment. Results:After three weeks of treatment, the difference of symptom score between TCM group and control group was significant(p<0.05); After6weeks, TCM group was significantly better than the control group((p<0.01). After3weeks and6weeks of treatment, two groups showed no significant difference in radiation-induced skin injury(p>0.05). Mucosa and salivary gland damage showed no significant differences in two groups after3weeks of treatment (p>0.05); but after6weeks, TCM group was significantly better than the control group (p<0.05). After treatment, compared with the control group, TCM group showed no significant differences in KPS and in degree of decline of white blood cells and platelets. Conclusion:Through this study,it showed that the synchronous prevention and treatment of chinese medicine in head and neck cancer radiotherapy side effects, can significantly improve the clinical symptoms, and reduce the radiation damage of the oral mucosa and salivary glands. This treatment is safe and effective. It has no significant toxicity and is worthy of promotion and further research.
