Ocular trauma is the main course of the non-congenital unilateral blindness inchildren. It is more difficult to assess the visual prognosis preoperatively in thepediatric open globe injury, as they are in their growth stage, as well as the visualorgan is with a certain degree of particularity. Inaccurate assessment of the degree ofinjury and untimely postoperative follow-up makes things even worse. Analysis ofocular trauma in children would give guidance to parents and children to takeprecautions to reduce the incidence of ocular trauma, meanwhile help to assess theinjury and provide a basis for the further implementation of the treatment means.Purpose: To observe the clinical characters and factors related to prognosis ofvisual acuity in pediatric open globe injury.Methods:168eyes of165consecutive patients who were treated for an openglobe ocular injury during2005.8-2012.4in the in-patient department of the hospitalwere retrospectively analyzed, who were followed up for1-6months. Age, gender, mechanism of injury, presenting visual acuity, type of wound, hyphema, cataractformation, eye contents prolapse, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, existenceof intraocular foreign body, endoophthalmitis were evaluated, followed by acomparison of outcomes and investigation of the relationship between the prognosisand the factors mentioned above. Results: Of the165children enrolled,136patients were males (82.4%) and29(17.6%) females. The main causes of injury were daily living utensils, industrial toolsand fireworks.102(60.8%) injuries were sharp,33(19.6%) injuries were blunt and33(19.6%) blast. Unfavorable postoperative final visual acuity (FVA) were related toblunt and blast injury, corneal trauma, corneoscleral laceration, loss of intraocularcontents, hyphema, vitreous hemorrhage and more than one operation procedures.Children with presenting visual acuity (FVA)≥0.3could have good prognosis, aswell as age between6to12and no losing of intraocular contents. Open globe injurywithout hyphema and operation undergone for traumatic cataract may havepostoperative eyesight improved.Conclusions:1.More boys were admitted to our hospital form2005-2012 because of the open globe injury;2. Penetrating injuries were the major type of injuryin this study, while the most common cause of injury was the utensils of daily life, followed by the industrial tools and fireworks;3. Parents’ monitoring, safetyeducation and instruction for children is needed for prevention;4. Prognosis is relatedto presenting visual acuity, type and location of the wound, eye contents prolapse, hyphema, vitreous hemorrhage, operation for cataract, multiple operation treatmentand sequential vitrectomy.
