Objective:Survey for senior citizens in non-small cell lung cancer patients>70years after surgical resection of clinicopathological characteristics and recurrent disease to summarize the clinical experience of the treatment of lung cancer. Methods:Sex, stage, histology, differentiation grade, smoking status, performance status, hemoglobin, Ki-67index, recurrent disease and disease-free survival were analyzed in382surgically resected NSCLC patients. Calculations were performed comparing patients<70to>70years. A postoperative follow-up period of2years enabled detailed correlations. Results:Rate of disease recurrence and disease-free survival did not differ between any age groups and was not influenced by clinicopathologic parameters. Elderly patients with a Ki-67index of>10%were associated with significantly decreased disease-free survival when compared to younger patients. Conclusions:The biological behavior of NSCLC as reflected by characteristics of clinicopathological characteristics and recurrent disease are similar for surgically resected patients among different age groups and does not warrant specific recommendations for the elderly surgical patient. The Ki-67index offers prognostic information for disease-free survival in the elderly.
