Rhizome of Smilax glabra Roxb. (Family Liliaceae) is the Chinese medicinal herb called tufuling. It has antipyretic, detoxifying, and diuretic actions. It may be beneficial in treatments for brucellosis, syphilis, furunculosis, eczema, dermatitis, nephritis, cystitis, mercury and silver poisoning. It was mainly produced in Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Anhui and Sichuan. In recent years, the clinical and pharmacol researches shows tufuling has good effects on anticancer, coronary heart disease, and stenocardia. In this thesis, ten compounds were isolated by the silica gel, macroporous resin, polyamide, ODS and Sephadex LH20 columns, and structures of nine compounds were identified by the physicochemical characters and the spectral analysis. They were obtained and identified asβ-sitosterol palmitate(1),β-sitosterol(2), daucosterol(3), 1-O-hexadecanoyl-3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-glycerol(4), astilbin(5), isoastilbin(6), quercetin(7), taxifolin(8), quercetin-4’-O-β-D-pyranglucoside(9). Compounds 1 and 4 are obtained from Smilax L. for the first time; compound 9 is isolated from this plant for the first time.Tufuling was identified and discriminated from Smilax china L., Heterosmilax japonica Kunth, Dioscorea hypogauca Palibin by generally physical and chemical identification, UV spectrum identification and thin-layer chromatography identification. The TLC of tufuling was also established for the first time, which can be distinguished from H. japonica Kunth, D. hypogauca Palib. The rhizome of Smilax glabra and its spurious breeds were determined on NMR spectrometer for the first time. The samples of S. glabra and S. china L showed clearly the characteristic resonance peaks of the astilbin and engeletin each, which could be used for the identification of S. glabra and S. china L. At the same time, it provides the new method and evidence for tufuling and other spurious breeds on identifications.
