Last Orders, winner of1996Booker Prize, can be a significant work written by GrahamSwift. Its unique narrative technique causes great success. Through dicyclic interior narration, polyphony, monologue, and significant symbols, Swift seizes accurately and profoundly thesuffering and torment in Swift’s interior world and sets a flag of recovering lofty and sincerityup for all people. The thesis analyzes spatial narrative techniques and spatial symbolsconcretely in Last Orders. First, a comprehensive introduction to the author, his works andtwo theories, Heterotopias Theory and Bakhtin’s Polyphony Theory are synthesized; thenmulti-dimensional spatial narrative techniques in the novel are respectively analyzed in detail;finally, symbols in the settings in the novel are interpreted and illuminated from the spatialperspective. Through the elaborate analysis, the thesis comes to the conclusion that theapplication of unique narration and symbolism makes the theme richer and the novel moremeaningful, and enriches people’s understanding of the novel. It also reflects Swift’s deepcontemplation about life and his concern to the living state of human beings.
