With the development of society and the improvement of science andtechnology, the theory and methods of Discourse Analysis are simultaneouslydeveloping. Since the Multimodal Discourse Analysis came into being, lotsof scholars have devoted to studying multimodal discourse and haveachieved plentiful achievements. Poetry-Painting discourse is typical Chinesediscourse in ancient times, yet there is little attention paid to it.This paper analyzes and studies Tang Bohu’s poetry-painting discoursesince his works contain various types, such as, figure, bird-flower, andmountain-water genres in the multimodal perspective. The writer chooses hisPPD as study subjects so that they can display Visual Grammar as fully aspossible. This paper mainly selects his fifteen pieces of PPD as study objects.Based on Kress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar created in1996,this research, using quality and quantity methods, describes and explains therepresentational meaning, the interpersonal meaning and the compositional meaning of the poetry-painting discourse, and gets a conclusion about thedisplay features of PPD under the Visual Grammar. Then, according toZhang Delu’s Form and Relationship of Multimodal Discourse Framework(2009), this paper analyzes and discusses the relationship between the visualmode and verbal mode and finds that the relation of the two modes is mainlycomplementary. In order to explore how the visual mode and verbal mode integratetogether to construe meaning, this paper applies Halliday’s SystemicFunctional Grammar (1985) to study the verbal mode in Sample15andKress and van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammer (1996) to study the visual modein Sample15. At last, this paper finds coherence is achieved by theinteraction of language and painting in PPD, such as, meaning, structure, color and composition. After these discussions, poetry-painting discourse can be comprehendedbetter by the appreciator and the learner. Meanwhile, this research touches onthe multiliteracy as well, which can enlighten teachers’ teaching.
