The trend of globalization accelerates information dissemination and culturalcommunication, in which news as a carrier of spreading information plays animportant role. Therefore, news translation becomes necessary. For a long time, attention has been paid to full translation and equivalence intranslation studies. However, in translation practice, equivalence cannot be achievedfully, especially in news translation. Since lots of ideological differences areinvolved in the process of translation, news translators always adopt “adaptation” inorder to eliminate influence of negative ideological factors. But many scholars take anegative view towards adaptation and regard it as distortion or falsification anddelimited a clear boundary between translation and adaptation. To some extent, adaptation has been excluded from the scope of translation. However, with thedevelopment of translation studies, adaptation has been highlighted gradually.Previous studies on news translation mainly focus on the analysis of linguisticfeatures and style, while the thesis aims to uncover the ideological factors embeddedin news reports from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). CDA asthe theoretical foundation for exploring ideological factors in discourse wasproposed by Fowler and Fairclough in the1970s and divided into three steps:“description”,“interpretation” and “explanation”. This thesis adopts comparativeanalytical method with CDA as theoretical basis and Systematic FunctionalGrammar (SFG) as analytical methodology. Through comparison between sourcetexts and target texts in respect of lexical selection, transitivity, modality andtransformation, it is intended to reveal ideological attributes of news and justify thenecessity of adaptation in news translation. According to the comparative analysis, some appropriate adaptation techniques will be proposed.
