Pingcuolin Temple is one of the temples changing the originalreligious sect. The monks of the temple believed Juenang sect originally, but later changed into Gelu sect in the period of the5thDalai Lama.Pingcuolin Temple is situated near the Juenang Temple, which is to thesouth of Brahmaputra in Lazi county, Shigatse. The temple is so remote that it receives little attention. However, what is fortunate is that due to shortage of money to repaint, a part of theancient mural paintings, such as the mural paintings of Sema Palace, remained original appearance. All are mysterious and charming, rangingfrom the marvelous mural art, complex mural history to the special styleof the work of art. After careful observation and research, the author confirmed that themural paintings belong to Qinze School. Obviously, it’s necessary andurgent to do researches about Qinze School, because it was once asbrilliant as Miantang School in Tibetan history but later declined and is indanger of extinction nowadays.Pingcuolin Temple is now too bleak to compare with its flourishingand prosperous conditions once in the history. Especially when faced withthe photos of the mural paintings taken by the Italian famousarchaeologist Tucci, G.60years ago, we are worried to find that the paintings are severely damaged. Undoubtedly, it’s quite urgent to studyand protect these mural paintings. I have no sufficient ability to becompetent in the work but sincerity. What I hope is that my thesis canarouse the attention of later generations to the mural paintings and makecontribution to Tibetan studies. Many questions occur to me when I stand in the yard of PingcuolinTemple: when were the paintings drawn, who draw them, what are thesimilarities and differences of the artistic form between these paintingsand others, what kind of status they have in Tibetan art history, whatartistic value they have, and so on. With these questions, I consulted alarge number of related materials and data, however, because of deficientmaterials, we have to mainly adopt a research method studying thepictures and photos to explore the artistic form of the mural paintings. The introduction chapter mainly states the content, meaning andmethod of the study.Chapter one summarizes relevant researches on this topic carriedby Chinese and foreign scholars. Proposes the core concept of QinzeSchool as the foundation and research method.Chapter two explains why the mural paintings in Pingcuolin Templebelong to Qinze School and explores their artistic form.Chapter three analyses and evaluates the artistic value of thepaintings in Sema Palace. Then explains the main causes and factors leading to the formation of the paintings’artistic form and style. At last, gives a summary.
