The intercultural communication course for undergraduates of Chinese languagemajor is teacher-oriented, which ignores the motivation and participation of thestudents; therefore the language competence and communicative competence of thestudents are not improved substantially. Due to the booming of modern technology,Internet is transforming a new way for intercultural communication.The thesis introduces the concept and the features of computer-mediatedintercultural communication (CMIC) based on those of computer-mediatedcommunication (CMC) and intercultural communication(IC). Then it conducts theCMIC project as a preliminary experiment among the Chinese learners and theirChinese language partners and analyses the typical excerpts of their Chinese chattingtexts. The analysis reflects the motivation and initiative, intercultural awareness,language learning capacity and the communicative skills of the learners. The thesissuggests that we introduce the CMIC project into the intercultural communicationclass for overseas undergraduates of Chinese language major and provides a tentativeidea for the course design, expecting that the students can bring their initiative,positivity, and creativity into play to study cooperatively and communicate smoothly by way of inquiry-based learning and participation based on their personalexperiences on CMIC project.
