Language De-hybridization And The Representation Of Mother-daughter Relationship In The Chinese Translation Of The Bonesetter’s Daughter

This thesis conducts a comparative study on the hybrid language in The Bonesetter’sDaughter and its translation, aiming at detecting the connection between the languagede-hybridization and re-presentation of the mother-daughter relationship in the translation.This paper firstly studies the nature, linguistic features, contextual implications, aestheticvalues, and thematic meaning of the hybrid language, and follows Leech and Short’s stylisticchecklist to classify the hybrid language into categories. Then this paper applies Zwart’stranslation shift model to analyze the shifts between the hybrid language and its translation,using the findings to evaluate the translation. Based on the case study, this paper comes up withsome major findings concerning the translation of hybrid language:The most frequent microstructural shift between the hybrid language and its translation is"stylistic modulation/generalization". The special linguistic attributes of the hybrid language(stylistic and hybrid features) are replaced by a general language form without peculiarity in thetranslation.The substantial micro shifts between the hybrid language and its translation lead to amicrostructural shift in its interpersonal functions. The translation reduces the stylistic value,literary effects and thematical meaning of the hybrid language, exerting a negative effect on therepresentation of the mother and daughter’s conflicts, their difference in cultural identity andtheir power relation.This paper finally comes up with a translation approach oriented by the "literary effects offunctionally relevant linguistic features", which may, at least partially, reflect the functionallyrelevant linguistic features of the hybrid language and represent its literary effects to the greatestextent.
