It is well-know that English is the most popular language in the world. English iswidely used in the international trade, international conference, international e-mail,etc. It is used as a communicative bridge. In order to cater the internationaldevelopment, to cater the needs of China’s development, it is necessary to improve thecollege students’ English competence, especially the oral English competence.However, the college students’ oral English is not proportional to the Englishknowledge they mastered. For the sake of promoting the reform of college Englishteaching, fitting in with the needs of the society for competent college English learners,the Ministry of Education issued English Course Requirements for Non-EnglishMajors (2004). It brings forward new teaching goals for college English education,which is to foster the students’ ability to use English in all and round way, especiallylistening and speaking competence. Enabling they can communicate with English wellin their future work, study and social communication, so that they can meet the needsof our social development and international communication.However, we found that Traditional oral English teaching method can notimprove students’ oral English effectively in the past teaching experience. Thiscondition demands our English teachers consider the actual needs of students andexplore a more effective approach in the teaching of oral English. Task-based teachingapproach is a task-centered language teaching ideology, which applied languageteaching theory in the practical teaching. So it has practical significance.This thesis aims to prove three questions through analysis of task-based teachingapproach rationale, its specific steps and the empirical study of TBLT. The threequestions are:1. Whether task-based teaching approach can arouse students’ interestand foster students’ positive attitude towards oral English?2. Whether task-basedteaching approach is superior to traditional approach, and whether it is more effectivein improving students’ oral English?3. Whether the students’ attitude towards TBA changed in the experiment class after the experiment, whether the students believeTBA is an effective approach in oral English teaching?Based upon rationale of TBLT, an experiment has been done in non-Englishmajor freshmen in the Luoyang Normal University. The experiment continued forabout four months. Through the analysis in the grades of pre-test, post-test,questionnaires and interviews to get some substantial conclusion that TBA isbeneficial to improve the students’ oral English. The analysis instrument used in thisthesis is SPSS software.From the data analysis of the results, we can get that TBA is more effective thanthe traditional PPP method in improving students’ oral English scores. From thequestionnaires and the interviews’ analysis, we can see that most students welcomeand favor TBA. And we can also infer that task-based teaching approach can arousestudents’ interest and foster students’ positive attitude towards oral English. Most ofthem hope the approach can be continued in their oral English class.This experiment applied TBA in college oral English teaching, so this thesis haspractical and instructional significance to college oral English teaching.
