Euphemism is a common language phenomenon. It is often used whensomething embarrassing or unpleasant has to be mentioned. Using euphemism canhelp maintain personal relationship and prevent communication barriers fromhappening.Scholars at home and abroad have done plenty of researches about euphemism.Based on the previous studies, the author tries to study English euphemism from apragmatic point of view. The thesis tries to explain that to complete thecommunication, how euphemisms arise by people flouting the Cooperative Principle(CP) and what are they used for. The author find out the other purposes euphemismcan fulfill except being polite, and besides, the author attempts to illustrate pragmaticfailures and the reason why it happens and what it may result in.
