For the present study,240English abstracts of research articles from fourjournals of translation studies, two leading Chinese journals (Chinese TranslatorsJournal and Shanghai Journal of Translators) and two international journals (Target:International journal of translation studies and Babel: International journal oftranslation) have been collected. Based on Swales’ IMRD (Introduction, Method,Results and Discussion) move pattern, the study adopts a comparative analysis in theexamination of the similarities and differences of the data collected. The results showthat1) Chinese scholars seldom present the four moves in their abstracts and Methodmove is missed.2) Both Chinese and International scholars employ the simple presenttense, active voice, modal verbs and the first personal pronouns. But their occurrencefrequencies are different. The international scholars construct sentences with diversetenses and modal verbs. The sentence structures of abstracts in International set aremore complex and flexible than that in Chinese set.The study finally proposes some translation strategies with the hope to offerreferences for Chinese scholars to translate successful and effective abstracts andaffirms that the well-organized abstracts could help scholars better participate in theinternational academic community and thus promote the international exchanges. |
